Call for Abstracts

The 1st International Conference on Advancing Politics & Governance for Sustainable Development (APGSD 2025), hosted by the Centre for Politics, University of Port Harcourt, invites submissions of original research, case studies, and policy papers. This landmark event brings together leading scholars, policymakers, civil society actors, and practitioners to discuss the critical intersections of politics, resource governance, and sustainable development in Africa.

We welcome abstracts that address the conference’s overarching theme:
Politics, Resource Governance, and Sustainable Development in Africa.

Abstracts may address (but are not limited to) the following areas:

  • Political governance

  • Decolonising governance through local content

  • Energy governance: Improving policy resource endowment outcomes in the energy sector

  • Ecological governance: Advancing research & local content for sustainable development

  • Human capital and indigenous entrepreneurship models for sustainable development

  • Legal governance: Legal framework and dispute resolution mechanisms

  • Security imperatives for resource management and development

  • Network governance: Institutions as enablers for local economic empowerment, especially for ‘special population groups’ (i.e., People Living with Disabilities, Women, and the Youth)

  • Country case studies on resource endowment and sustainable development

  • Gender and development

  • Intergovernmental relations and the extractive industry

  • Federalism and development

  • Social movements and resource governance

  • Abstracts should not exceed 250 words.

  • Include the title of the paper, author’s name(s), institutional affiliation(s), and email address(es).

  • Abstracts must clearly state the research problem, objectives, methodology, and key findings/arguments.

  • Submissions should align with at least one of the listed sub-themes.

  • All abstracts must be submitted in English and in Word or PDF format.

  • Co-authored papers are welcome (please indicate all contributors).

  • Deadline for Abstract Submission: 15 July 2025

  • Notification of Acceptance: 30 July 2025

  • Submission of Final Papers: 30 August 2025

  • Conference Dates: 21–23 October 2025

Accepted abstracts will be considered for oral presentations or panel discussions during the conference. Presenters will be allocated time for presentation and Q&A. Selected high-quality papers may also be recommended for peer-reviewed publication after the conference.
